Detection of Phytophthora species

Phytophthora (from the Greek word for “plant destroyer”) is a genus of fungus-like microorganisms belonging to the class oomycetes. Species of this genus infect a lot of different plant species. The symptoms are not always clear and the choice of countermeasures depends on the identification of the pathogen.

  • In fruit production, Phytophtora cactorum amongst other things causes crown rot.
  • Phytophthora ramorum infects a lot of wood species. These include species of Viburnum and rhododendrons in tree nurseries and gardens.
  • Phytophthora infestans is the causative pathogen of late blight in potatoes and brown rot in tomatoes.

Are you afraid of your plants being attacked by Phytophthora species? We can identify pathogens of the genus Phytophthora using selective media.
